SFSD Approves New Staff, Classes

The Southern Fulton School District (SFSD) approved the following staff for the 2018-19 school year at their August monthly meeting last Tuesday.

Teachers: Megan Bigelow and Diane Yingling were approved as pre-K teachers on grant status for one year pending completion of all paperwork.

Substitute teachers approved were Deb Cooper, John McGraw, Jamie Taylor, and Marley Elbin.

Substitutes: Kayla Messner was approved as a substitute paraprofessional and Connie Mellott, a substitute secretary.

Athletic coaches approved include Anthony Shives, junior high boys assistant soccer coach; Drew Wink, varsity boys soccer coach; Jeremiah Ashkettle, junior high assistant soccer coach; Tera Elder, junior high assistant volleyball coach; and Brett Foor, junior high assistant baseball coach. Board members accepted, with regret, a letter of resignation from Adam Hoopengardner as elementary girls basketball coach effective immediately.

The school board also OK’d the following mentor/mentee partnerships: Joe Hollenshead to mentor Henry McKenzie, Melissa Duncan to mentor Megan Bigelow, and Amber Goldizen to mentor Diane Yingling.

The following classes with an enrollment of 10 students or under were approved: 3-D Art (9), Accounting 1 (4), advanced physics (8), AP stats (9), and interactive media (6). This does not include special education, remedial/recovery courses or votech class, and numbers are subject to change. Two nonresident students were approved to attend SFSD during the 2018-19 school year. Approval was also given to Policy 008.1, local board procedures, organization chart; and to Policy 210.1, pupils, possession/ use of asthma inhalers/epinephrine auto-injectors.

Superintendent Will, currently serving as school safety coordinator, announced that she received the safety assessment and will review it with the safety committee in September. Jeff Hull highlighted that the elementary will be reviewing the pickup procedures for the first few weeks of school.

Transportation

Bus #6 was approved to change from sole proprietor Lynda Strait to LS Strait Transportation LLC. The board approved Fischer’s Garage as the inspection site and the month of November for the third inspection during years 16 and 17 of bus contract agreements.

Grounds

The board agreed to allow Girl Scout Troop 80338 to use the elementary parking lot on Friday, Oct. 26, from 6-8 p.m. for their second annual trunk-or-treat event.

Agreements

Approval was given to the Authorization and Waiver of Liability Agreement for Parent to Act as Aide Agreement, the Parent Transportation Agreement with SFSD, the agreement for the Pre-K Counts grant between the Pennsylvania Department of Education and SFSD, and an agreement for behavioral support and educational services between SFSD and Extended Family Programs Inc. and Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8. Approval was also given to the Memorandum of Understanding between SFSD and the SFEA (Southern Fulton Education Administration) for the district to hire two pre-K teachers for one year.

The following board members were present: Patrick Bard, Jeff Hull, Eric Barnhart, Richard Morgan, Timothy Mellott, Mark Mosemann, Donnie Gordon, Kirk Layton, and Allen Morton. The meeting was conducted by board President Allen Morton. Also present were Tara Will, superintendent; Meredith Hendershot, high school principal; Kathy Cutchall, elementary principal; Diane Younker, special education director; Doug Leisher, technology specialist; Debra Schetrompf, business manager; and MaryAnn Johnson, board secretary. Visitors present were Carol Shoemaker, Dorothy Hixon, and Lori Bard.
