Only One Month Left In Pa. Budget Year

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania lawmakers are facing complicated and hotly disputed issues as they return to the Capitol with a month until the state government’s fiscal year ends.

The House and Senate will be in session Monday, with debates over public employee pensions and a natural gas severance tax on their agenda.

June is always a busy month for lawmakers, and many are wondering if they’ll wrap up budget legislation by July 1.

The Republican-controlled Legislature has to yet to show how it plans to close an enormous projected deficit, while GOP lawmakers float competing plans to overhaul benefits in Pennsylvania’s two biggest public employee pension systems.

The House may consider a budget bill, while senators will hear testimony on Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to raise taxes on natural gas drilling.
