McQuade Wins At Path Valley

Dalton McQuade, 4-cylinder Thunder Car winner. Dalton McQuade, 4-cylinder Thunder Car winner. The 600cc Modifieds made their first trip to the high banks of Path Valley Speedway. Every record book shows that there can only be one “first” winner of a division at any track, and Saturday night Aaron Bowes put his name in the record books as the first-ever feature winner of 600cc Modifieds at Path Valley.

In the 270cc Micro Sprint division Brandon Hawkins appeared to be the man to beat. Hawkins won the heat race, started second for the feature, and beat polesitter Ted Volz to Turn 1 and the lead. Hawkins was already leading by several car lengths when something broke exiting Turn 4 and his car turned hard right. Before he had time to react, the car went straight into the outside wall. Hawkins climbed out of the car, apparently unharmed, but the car was not as fortunate. Levi Peck took over the top spot on the restart on Lap 3. Peck had his racecar setup dialed in perfectly, and he handily led the last 18 laps to score the win. Colby Dice wrestled second place from Jerry Palm with two laps to go, while Adam Warner came from the back of the 10-car field to finish fourth. Cody Hackenberry completed the top five.

Devin Beidel started on the pole and led the first six laps of the 600cc Micro Sprint feature. Several early cautions kept the field bunched together, and Jim Young dove to the inside of Beidel in Turn 1 on a restart on Lap 7 to take the lead. Beidel’s chain came off just a few laps later. Steve Whary ran behind Young in second place but was not able to gain any ground. That is until Lap 17 when Whary started closing in. Just after getting the “two laps to go” signal Whary powered past Young for the winning pass. An excited Whary in victory lane stated, “I’m not sure if I got faster or he slowed down, but I just drove in hard and the car stuck.” Young held on to second. J.D. Harman and Hannah Riser ran strong, finishing third and fourth. Kameron Morral rebounded from hitting the backstretch wall in warmups and used the high groove to finish fifth.

Twenty-five drivers signed in for the first ever appearance by the 600cc Modifieds at Path Valley Speedway. Aaron Bowes took the lead at the drop of the green and restarts were the only time he was challenged after that, leading all 20 laps to take the checkered flag. Jon Pepe held off a late race charge by Nick Mady to finish second while Mark Ludwig out-dueled Jorclyn Mohr for the fourth spot. In victory lane Bowes said that Path Valley was “very racy” and he was looking forward to when the series returns later in the year.

The Sidewinder Sprints run twin 15 lap features instead of qualifying heats and a feature. In the first event Reed Salony dominated, leading all 15 laps on the way to victory. Salony was followed by Brandon Yarlett, Jerry Strausbaugh, Zach Overmiller and Mike Zielonis. On the start point-leader Rich Halter made contact with another racer which turned him into the outside wall and almost rolling over, ending his string of wins at Path Valley at three.

Mike Zielonis used the same formula to win the second feature as Reed Salony did in the first. Zielonis led every lap on his way to the win. Jonathan Hynes showed much improvement with a solid second place, finishing ahead of Zach Overmiller, Brandon Yarlett and Jerry Strausbaugh.

Saturday, June 27: 270cc and 600cc Micro Sprints plus Penn Mar Vintage and ACMS Stock 600cc Micro Sprints, along with a Kids Foot Race.

Sunday, June 28: Posse at the Path 410 Sprints plus Speedsters.

When rain hit during intermission the previous week, six features were rescheduled. Five of them were Friday night, running with the five that were already scheduled, giving the fans 10 features worth of racing action all in one night.

The five makeup features started the night’s activities and the 4-Cylinder Thunder Cars were first out. Dalton McQuade grabbed the early lead and built up just enough of an advantage that when his car started overheating the final three laps he was still able to hold off Kyle Martin for the win.

In the Super Stock makeup event Carl Miller led the way until Bill Powell used an inside move to take the lead on Lap 12. Powell drove away from the field the remaining laps to claim the win. Austin Johnson also worked past Miller in the closing laps to finish second, while Devin Hart finished fourth and Curtis Guyer fifth.

Steve Lowery led the first two laps of the Street Stock feature but pulled off the track on Lap 3. Ken Singer took over from there and drove away from Wayne Hawbaker for the win.

Bill Kennedy got his first win this year in the makeup feature for the Mini Stocks. Kennedy led all 20 laps, although dealing with an engine that wasn’t quite right. Shaun Patterson ran a close second with Kenny Hill finishing third.

The running order was switched up for the regularly scheduled features and the Mini Stocks were now first to take the track. Shane Sixeas led the first lap and then gave way to Jeremy Ott on Lap 2. Ott led comfortably the rest of the way for the win. Shaun Patterson again finished in second place, this time leading Gary Dehart, Kurt Knepper and Sixeas across the line.

In the second Street Stock feature it was Wayne Hawbaker leading the first two laps before pitting with mechanical trouble. This time Steve Lowery took over the point, and Lowery led the last 13 laps for the win.

The 4-Cylinder Thunder Car feature ran much like the makeup, with just a few changes in the order. Tony Hampton led from start-tofinish to take the checkers. Kyle Martin again finished one spot short, finishing second. Dalton McQuade finished third, and Shaun Linn was credited for fourth when Robert McQuade was disqualified for not wearing all required safety gear (gloves).

Carl Miller again showed the way to start the Super Stock feature. As in the makeup feature, Miller lost the lead to Bill Powell, this time on Lap 6. Shortly after losing the lead, Miller’s left rear tire went flat, forcing him to the pit area. Curtis Guyer tried to keep it interesting, staying close to Powell, but Guyer could not mount a serious challenge, and Powell claimed his second win of the night.

The final event of the night was the Strictly Stock feature. Charles Stallman took the lead on the first lap with Justin Williamson right behind. Williamson continued to pressure Stallman until he finally made his move and the winning pass on Lap 12. Williamson then led the last four laps to claim victory. Stallman was second and Glenn Wilson third.
